I wrote this STRYYK review because I was given a try of the brand and also there is a lot of confusion around non alcoholic alternative spirits such as alcohol free rum, or even whiskey.
So STRYYK not rum ?
There are a lot of truly dreadful mimics around and to be honest I don’t anymore include alcohol free beer and wine in this mix.
They have really got their act together.
I would also include alcohol free sparkling wine in this as well. Its pretty amazing!
But Rum, how could they replicate that?
The truth is you can’t, well not completely.
I don’t just mean without the alcohol either but the overall taste.
But you have to give it a good go if alcohol free choice is to keep expanding.
The way alcohol free spirits are made is completely different to the way beer and wine without the alcohol is produced.
After all it was beer that was first to market then wine.
Gin followed and the rest are finding their way around the bar a bit!
And I get it!
However, there are a lot of good things to say about STRYYK not Rum and yes it’s really alcohol free spirit not rum.
However, a choice is a choice and in an alcohol filled world we need it.
What is STRYYK Alcohol Free Spirit?
The thing we are talking about an alcohol free alternative to rum.
If you have had a Caribbean spiced rum then I think that is what they are going after.
Is it the perfect alternative?
Probably not but they give it a good go to be fair.
This is spiced rum alcohol freestyle and they use the flavor often associated with rum to give it that feel. So :
For me it is these ingredients that manages to create a non-alcoholic rum.
A bit of a caveat here but apart from an occasional rum and coke or my trip to the Caribbean rum was never top of my list.
But I know the taste to say if it’s good or not.
Given that the most questions I get on the blog surrounds this one:
Is alcohol free calories free? No not generally is my answer.
I am pleased to report that this has got a lot of positives when we talk calories and alcohol free.
So if you add alcohol free to no sugar, fat and zero artificial ingredients it becomes an attractive option.
So it is a good call for STRYYK not Rum.
Of course like alcohol free gin it is all down to the mixer you choose.
There is no point having a low calories alcohol free spirit to top it up with full laden sugar in a mixer such as cola or tonic.
You can read my review of my favorite alcohol free gin here
The other good news is that as more and more people come to alcohol free drinks’ for other byproducts for their health the industry is stepping up!
So not only is it low in calories it also ticks the boxes of :
- Vegan friendly
- Gluten free
That is a big tick if that is what you are looking for.
I even know people who hardly drink alcohol but have made the switch just because of the vegan credentials for example.
Otherwise, the ingredients are pretty simple really:
- Chilled Filtered Water
- Citric Acid
- Natural Flavorings & Distillates
- Chili Extract
- Potassium Sorbate
Where Can you buy this?
Like many alcohol free choices I have never seen this in a bar or restaurant.
In fact, I don’t think I have seen an alcohol free drinks’ menu.
It’s just not something bars are great for and I know more alcohol free bars are popping up but I am fine around people drinking.
I just can’t drink alcohol myself.
In fact, I think I will take back the menu comment as I have seen a Mocktails menu. But that really is it!
You can visit the STRYYK website but also you can order easily through amazon. I have included my affiliate link below.
As an amazon associate I earn from qualifying purchases but this does not affect what you pay. I do my best to make that clear at all times and follow FTC guidelines.
Why would you drink this?
Well would I drink it on its own?
Probably not if I am really honest.
This could really be a great alternative for a classic rum and coke.
Of course there are other mocktails that this would work for including a Virgin Mai Tai or even a Virgin Alcohol Free Mojito.
I would give it a very high score for a simple rum and cola where you don’t want to stand out from the crowd.
Remember social pressure is one of the major issues around people feeling the need to drink.
Also know your drinking limits with the drink aware website.
My friend tried it with some ginger beer that had a good kick and I think that is one option that is a good call.
This brand has a fiery taste on its own so it makes it a perfect combination.
There will be some people who say it tastes and smells nothing like its cousin.
And to be honest I hear this all the time from people who really want alcohol but we have to give it a go I think!
If you are going to pair it with tonic water which can be a good option I would recommend Fever Tree Tonic Light.
The thing I have learned is if you are mixing alcohol free spirits then be sure to have plenty of ice to hand.
But you really do need a good quality mixer to make it a quality drink 100%.
Fresh real limes and lemons are a good call but avoid the prepacked juices.
If you are pregnant, driving or just wanting to avoid a hangover then this can be a great option.
There are lots of reasons why people want alcohol alternatives.
If you have a rum so called “itch” and want an alcohol free fix of it I would recommend this option.
Plus the branding is well cool although it does not really say what it is on the tin if you know what I mean.
Remember it’s an alcohol rum alternative which is great for mocktails.
Go in with that attitude and you will be pleasantly surprised.
I know I was.
When would you drink it?
I am always asked how should I drink alcohol free drinks?
The answer is how do you want to drink it !
Never restrict yourself.
This is ideal for pre dinner mocktails.
It does really mix well within a mix but beware of adding it to lots of sugar.
It would make a great summer drink and while I would not recommend it with food I can see it working well with a barbecue or a post dinner drink.
One to take to a house party and there is no chance of it getting mixed up as the labeling really stands out.
It is a unique brand so I would give in 10/10 for the name and how it looks.
I personally would not drink it with a meal but each to their own of course.
If this was an option on a plane going on holiday then with a diet cola it would be an option for me!
What’s your view?
I would love to know if you have tasted STRYYK Alcohol Free Spirit as part of a swap for alcohol based rum.
Or maybe you have tried an alternative?
There are a few but not many!
Now as you can tell I am not as convinced as some of the zero brands like alcohol free, beer, wine, gin and cider so I would welcome your views.
