No is the answer.

Alcohol dehydrates you, not alcohol-free beer. But, unfortunately, this is now a tactic often used to say keep drinking alcohol.

The fact is the more alcohol you drink, the more dehydrated you will become.

Period and science back this up.

As the alcohol-free market continues to grow, and when I say grow, I mean double-digit growth, the rumour mill stands to go wild.

Alcohol-Free Beer will dehydrate you; it’s awful for you!

The reality is somewhat different.

The fact is Alcohol-Beer does not dehydrate you.

And there are four reasons that you can use in defence if someone says that about the non-alcoholic stuff.

It used to be, of course, that alcohol-free beer tasted awful, And they were right,

In the UK, alcohol-free went wrong in the city of London, so the financial district. Top-flight money dealers used to take clients to have a beer at lunchtime before returning to the office.

It was all about the money, and playtime was restricted.

But there was one brand that would impact alcohol-free beer sales for a long time to come.

It tasted so bad that it was left on the side of the bar. So it was a “look” thing.

As non-alcoholic beer is on track and sales are growing, the knives are out for it, so it is good to have your defence planned.

Remember, alcohol is a poison which, in moderation for most people, is fine.

So this is not an argument that should be used against alcohol-free beer.

Once you realise what alcohol does to our bodies, you think, oh, right, why did you not make the shift to alcohol-free drinks sooner.

It’s complicated but imagine your organs trying to get the poison out of your body first. It’s bound to affect the chemistry. Right?

Of course, with an alcohol-free beer, you don’t have that issue. Even low alcohol drink could help here.

Yes, alcohol can dehydrate you.


Alcohol is a diuretic.



Alcohol is a diuretic.

I don’t think people relate that to alcohol at all. But what does it mean?

After a few drinks, the effect of alcohol is to remove any fluid from your circulation via the usual organs like your bladder and kidney.

Note I’m not an expert, but it makes sense.

Coffee, for example, can be a diuretic, ever had too much coffee and you keep running to the bathroom.

People even say, “I have drunk too much coffee!”


With alcohol, it is why health care organizations like the NHS in the UK say to drink plenty of water when you’re on a night out. So it makes sense, right?

It is one of the reasons why we get a hangover after an alcohol drinking session.

People will often drink on an empty stomach, and the result is that the alcohol hits your blood system fast.

It is why drinking wine and going low carb is not a good idea no matter what the experts say on diet programmes.

Food and water can slow the absorption rate down. But, of course, with alcohol-free beer, this is not an issue, yes the beer is there, but there is no alcohol.

Alcohol travels to your brain and shrinks it more or less and also gets into the lungs. Have you ever wondered why you get breathalyzed by the police if they suspect you have been drinking?

One of the benefits and why alcohol-free beer does not dehydrate you is that your body is not having to get rid of what efficiently is a poison.

After all, it is safety first.

Your body will where it can act to keep you alive.

The liver can only get rid of the alcohol in its own time, and it won’t be rushed. One unit of alcohol will take one hour regardless.

So one small standard glass of a drink will take one hour.

It’s a slow process. So once that alcohol is in your liver, it starts being a diuretic.


Water is flushed out much faster than any alcohol you had in the system.

With a non-alcoholic beer, not only are you keeping the level of alcohol very low, if at all, but you are also getting extra fluid inside your system? So it makes sense, right?

That is good news when it comes to keeping hydrated and non-alcoholic beer. Well, let’s say they are good partners.

2 Alcohol-Free Beer Can Be Isotonic

Your mind knows when athletics start to be the face of alcohol-free beer like tennis player Rafael Nadal that something’s afoot.

I would generally be a bit cynical, but alcohol-free beer science and even a personal trainer I work with backs this up.

The thing is sports like its studies.

Non-alcoholic beer contains ingredients that can balance out our body after a workout. So some alcohol-free beers are marketed as Isotonic.

They contain water, carbohydrates, protein and vitamins. It also has a good balance of salt and sugar.

When you think about the term isotonic, you think of high-powered sports drinks as they replace water and so-called electrolytes after a workout with plenty of sweat.

I know many personal trainers who discuss alcohol-free beer and say it could help with cramp with the right balance of ingredients.

Non-Alcoholic beers also contain Polyphenols that can protect us from ultraviolet light.

In Germany, there have been a few investigations into whether all the hops and vitamins in beers with alcohol-free beer could help further in athletic nutrition.

Now it seems rather than shoving down a whole carton of orange packed with sugar, an alcohol-free beer might be a better offering overall.

Sports science has also been looking at the effect of alcohol-free beer on injury and recovery times, and the results seem to be looking good.

And the one thing we know is that the benefits would disappear if non-alcoholic beer did dehydrate you.

Should I be drinking sports drinks instead?

Well, look at the back of the sports drink and check all the ingredients.

After a gym workout, do we need all that energy pumped back in via sugar?

Unfortunately, the answer seems to be no.

Our bodies hold water better and can properly hydrate when we consume calories as we drink.

Therefore, energy drinks are helpful during exercise because they restore glycogen in the body – the sugar-based compound that we use to store energy.

But afterwards, not do much. This is because we need to balance our bodies.

But still, alcohol-free people have a hard time.

Of course, the best advice is to drink plenty of water, but please let’s not bash alcohol-free drinks.

4 – So, is juice and coffee the answer?

I am amazed how many gurus say juicing is the answer.

Would we be drinking that amount of apples, oranges or bananas? Of course, we would not.

Coffee, OK, but what about all that caffeine. Sure, a few cups are fine are but is alcohol-free beer so much more unhealthy.

After all, coffee is a stimulant.

Yes, juices and smoothies contain vitamins and minerals, and coffee can be good on many levels.

But that does mean alcohol-free beer dehydrates you. Of course not.

It’s just the wrong argument that alcohol-free is somehow evil.

Plus, the science does not back it up and would tennis players like Raffa Nadel be putting his name to one?

I think not.

What about a snack to go with non-alcoholic beers?

Nuts and I say that with love.

A few beers and crafty pints of alcoholic beer add more and more nuts, crisps, Bombay mix, and other salty snacks.

The list really is endless when you have had a drink!

It’s the bars way, as you know, of getting you to drink more alcohol, and of course, you then drink more alcohol as the night goes on.

You drink more alcohol; you’re thirsty!

And then some more. Will this thirst ever go away?

I have an ex-colleague who went alcohol-free and suggested that the bar serving alcohol-free beer add vegetables that can help with hydration to the bar.

It went down rather well.

After all, alcohol makes us eat more.

Ever ended up in a kebab shop a few down the pub. Yes, all been there!

So, what snack on the bar did he suggest? You will love these. It is a vegetable that is known to hydrate us.

Mix these with your non-alcoholic beer, and you are a hydration winner!

Now, most of these suggestions are downright dull. But here is what you have to imagine.

You are ready to drink alcohol-free beer, so your judgment is perfect and sober, plus you have already opted for a more healthy lifestyle.

Try these with your alcohol-free beer; they will go down a treat.

Cucumber. This vegetable is about 96 per cent water and can keep you hydrated.

Ask the bar to provide some nice hummus dip.

It will go well with a light non-alcoholic lager.

Celery. There was a rumour that eating celery uses more calories than you consume. Urban myth?

The fact is celery is 95 per cent water and a bit boring but try it with a blue cheese dip.

It also has plenty of vitamins as well including vitamin A.

Mix the celery with a few tomatoes, which are about 94 per cent water.

Watermelon carefully sliced is excellent, and if you fancy swapping alcohol-free beer for a weather melon drink, then it’s a great alternative.

Watermelon comes in at 91 per cent.

Wow, impressive, eh?

Well, at the end of the day, if you are sober, you are more likely to choose them over salty snacks at a bar or even at home, for that matter.

What is the reality of Alcohol-Free Beer?

The reality is alcohol-free beer does not dehydrate you.

It is mainly a natural ingredient of hops and water. OK, yes, so it will have some sugar.

But really, a carton of orange juice is better? You are laughing.

I drank smoothies for a whole two weeks and was probably at the risk of getting some awful disease related to my weight.

When you drink alcoholic beer, stop drinking or even reduce alcohol, then alcohol-free beer has to be at least slightly better right?

And most non-alcoholic beer does not add in tons of sugar either.

Do yourself a favour, don’t trust this article.

I am just someone who gave up alcohol because I had to because of my health.

But next time someone says of the alcohol-free beer, stay away because it will dehydrate you; tell them to take a run and jump.

Or keep drinking that alcohol; it’s your call.

Second thought, why not mix with some excellent hummus and carrot instead of that kebab with all that sugar.
